Rachel Maddow stated it plainly tonight: Since nothing was ever publicly said to decisively refute and rebuke the neocon’s agenda, promoting American military involvement in the Middle East, nothing prevents them from doing it again. In fact they are, for Afghanistan. Under new nomenclature. The same ones pursuing the same ends by the same means, as if nothing had changed. This is them whistling Forever past Shatilla and Sabra. Breathing each other’s Jewishness; exhaling Madoff economic oxygen.

Gordon Brown used the phrase “oxygen of confidence” at London press conference with Obama. That is what the G-20 need to try to exude, alright. But the fact that he was required to say it makes it a “false double”, as if saying it DID it –reversing the no-confidence, dress-down-day-for-bankers atmosphere this Wednesday. To “believe” in his and Obama’ government spending is, psychosemiotically, to go with the flow that accepts this “squaring”, and breathes the oxygen of Gordon Brown’s confidence. The problem is, only yesterday all were hearing “YOU HAVE SPENT ALL OUR MONEY!” yelled at him in Parliament. He doesn’t ‘look good up there.” It isn’t “coming off”, except for the photo-op moment.

This morning leading neoconservatives such as William Kristol and Robert Kagan held a meeting at the Mayflower Hotel -- in support of President Obama's Afghanistan policy. Kristol and Kagan, as Foreign Policy's Laura Rozen has reported, have formed a successor organization to the Project for the New American Century, which came into disrepute for its advocacy of the Iraq War. The new one is called the Foreign Policy Initiative. Its contention is that America remains, in the words of Madeleine Albright, the "indispensable nation"and, furthermore, that neocons can play a valuable role in coming years in ensuring that it remains one.

…. , the founding of the Foreign Policy Initiative suggests that there will be a fierce battle for the soul of the Obama administration between liberal hawks and neocons, on the one side, and between anti-interventionist progressives, on the other, over policy towards Afghanistan, Russia, China, and Iran.

PM: We may be forced to attack Iran

The primary imperative for the United States and President Barack Obama is to put an end to Iran's nuclear race, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said before his swearing-in Tuesday, adding that if the US failed to do so Israel might be forced to resort to a military strike on the Islamic Republic's nuclear installations.

"The Obama presidency has two great missions: fixing the economy, and preventing Iran from gaining nuclear weapons," Netanyahu told The Atlantic. The Iranian drive for a nuclear weapon was a "hinge of history," he said, emphasizing that all of "Western civilization" was responsible for preventing an Iranian bomb.
