Sid Thomas S*-ing to Power

S*-ing to Power **** S is for Sign, * is for Use. S*, as in S*-ing, is for SLINGING THE SHLONG AGAINST PHILOSOPHICAL AND OTHER ABUSE (Let S* be verse, picture, symbology, rant, whatever talks eternal, American, now) The world is ready and waiting for what we can do here. As John Calvin put it, differently, "It's up to you."

If Katrina is an Act of God

If Katrina is an Act of God….

Preface

Could we reason together a minute? The question doesn’t call for *you* or anyone else to actually “believe in God”, whatever that might mean, but only for the ability to exercise a modest inferential capacity for which human rationality has long proven up to following, if it didn’t invent it itself. (Cynics, with some justification, ignore proofs of the existence of God, inverted, doubled on itself and guaranteed by Augustine’s theory of truth, including truths of logic themselves, later shown by Wittgenstein to be elaborate tautologies). The phrase “belief in God” is actually an inner misdirection by sign-uses, splitting-off textual content from token commitment, thus producing “theists” and “atheists” as “metaphysical categories”; something you “are”.)

This invitation may prove too tall an order for types like ILP, not to get personal. See his reassurance to Obi’s anguish ed 9.14 p.m.

(Exchange: “Has the situation in New Orleans reached Biblical proportions in its scale of misery, gloom, and despair?
Is Hurricane Katrina an apocalyptical event for the United States
?” …9.14 pm

Reply:

ORAIBI, No, HK is not an apocalyptic event. Cyclonic storms have been around for eons (1), and odds are good that if you live on the Gulf or Atlantic coast eventually one will come your way (2).

It is just unfortunate that people in that situation founded a city below sea level. Has nothing to do with god, just geophysics. (3)” 9.40 pm.)

Comment: 1. is a non-sequitor. Obi’s question wasn’t about “cyclonic storms” in earth’s history but about a Biblical perspective on this one.

2. is typical irrelevant textualist twaddle. To whom is it supposed to be addressed, and what in the hell is the point?

3. How does he know what had to do with “god”? – unless that stands by definition for what geophysics excludes, arbitrarily collapsing the four kinds of Aristotle causes into the “material”. But God (case sensitive), as a token of the completed totality of Reason (“thought thinking thought”, or the pure Form of act-of-being), means something that includes the material causal totalities but is not exhausted by it.

TEXT

If Katrina is an act of God, He is very angry with this nation, sorely punishing America for its sinfulness; perhaps not done
-for its devastation of Iraq – what goes around comes around;
-for the way of being responsible for spending $200,000,000,000 to water Iraq’s desert with rivers of blood, and opening the storehouses of the world to enemies with just cause for hatred;
-for the perversion and twistedness of persons such as Pat (-sy) Robertson, Rove, Bush, the Neocons, Frist – Rupert Murdoch bringing the message of responsibility to help America’s poor, so help me God – who will all rise now and say: “This is America, Americans always stand together to help Americans in time of need and disaster,” and get Koffi Anan to call for help from the United Nations organizations.

****/

The scale of magnitude, millennial timing, super-hubristic international behavior, wantonly depraved devastation of basic standards of human civilization in the Middle East, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, plus enormous inequalities ravaging the domestic economy in favor if the rich … mark Hurricane Katrina as an apocalyptic event destined to radically re-arrange the face of moral, religious, political responsibility in America.
