Use Third Eye to Steer by the Sun

A series of clever experiments into the reptilian “third eye” has confirmed that lizards use this patch of light-sensitive cells as a sun-calibrated compass.
To test how third eyes — technically known as parietal eyes — help them find their way, biologists at Italy’s University of Ferrara first trained Italian wall lizards to swim from the center of a small outdoor swimming pool to a hidden ledge at its edge. A fence was erected around the pool, so that the only visual point of reference was the position of the sun. The lizards passed the test.
The researchers next put groups of lizards in three artificially lit rooms for a week. In the control room, lights brightened and dimmed in sync with the rise and fall of day. Lights in the other rooms were set out of sync, causing the lizards’ body clocks to be artificially sped up or slowed down by six hours.
When tested in the pool, only lizards from the control group could find the ledge. Depending on the state of their body clock, the others swam too far to the left or right, as would be expected if they’d used the sun to navigate and were now confused by the disjunction between the sun’s location and where they expected it to be.
Finally, the researchers covered the lizards’ third eyes with paint or — in a later, more gruesome iteration — removed their third eyes altogether. In both cases, the lizards swam in random directions, no longer able to navigate at all.
The findings, published last Friday in the Journal of Experimental Biology, reinforce the third-eye-as-compass theory, at least in lizards. The eyes are also found in some species of amphibians and fish. If it works the same way in fish, that could help explain part of their navigational prowess.
Humans also have a version of the third eye system. Unfortunately for hikers and drivers, it’s located under our skulls. It’s essential for spatial processing, but not much help if you’re lost.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says that while swine flu vaccine will be voluntary, the government will "strongly recommend" that people get it.
Obama was briefed Tuesday on the nation's preparedness for swine flu by senior officials, including Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Homeland Security Janet Napolitano. He spoke afterward from the Rose Garden.
Obama said that the federal government is preparing at all levels for this fall's expected surge in swine flu cases. He said, "I don't want anybody to be alarmed, but I do want everyone to be prepared."
A White House report suggests up to half the U.S. population could be infected. Vaccine development is ongoing and it is likely to be available by October.

A "pandemic response bill" currently making its way through the Massachusetts state legislature would allow authorities to forcefully quarantine citizens in the event of a health emergency, compel health providers to vaccinate citizens, authorize forceful entry into private dwellings and destruction of citizen property and impose fines on citizens for noncompliance.
If citizens refuse to comply with isolation or quarantine orders in the event of a health emergency, they may be imprisoned for up to 30 days and fined $1,000 per day that the violation continues.

Before the Speech:
• Teachers can build background knowledge about the President of the United States and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama and motivate students by asking the following questions:
Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?
• Teachers can ask students to imagine being the President delivering a speech to all of the students in the United States. What would you tell students? What can students do to help in our schools? Teachers can chart ideas about what they would say.
• Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials, like the mayor, senators, members of congress, or the governor? Why is what they say important?
During the Speech:
• As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following:
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

White House Withdraws Call for Students to 'Help' Obama
President Obama's plan to speak to the nation's schoolchildren in a video address next week erupted into controversy as critics claimed he was trying to indoctrinate America's kids.
The Obama administration is rethinking its course recommendations for students ahead of President Obama's address to the the nation's schoolchildren next week, rewriting its suggestions to teachers for student assignments on how to "help the president."
White House aides said the language was supposed to be an inspirational, pro-education message to America's youths, but its unintended consequences were evident.
Among the activities initially suggested for pre-K to 6th grade students was to "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."
Another assignment for students after hearing the speech was to discuss what "the president wants us to do."
The Washington Times was first to report. Thursday that the plan was being reconsidered. Presidential aides also acknowledged to the newspaper that they helped the U.S. Education Department write the suggested assignments, which stirred criticism by many who say Obama is trying to indoctrinate the education

Bloomberg will outline New York City's strategy to fight swine flu in schools.
An estimated 800,000 city residents got swine flu last year, so the city is gearing up for the new onslaught.
Last year many city schools were closed to prevent the spread of the h1n1 -- swine flu -- virus. But sources told CBS 2 HD on Monday that this year the schools chancellor will be much less likely to do that. The city's plan for the 2009-2010 flu season includes:
* Keeping schools open as much as possible
* Keeping flu patients isolated from other patients in hospital emergency rooms
* And urging people to seek other alternatives to emergency rooms to avoid over taxing the ERs
Getting the vaccine will also be important when it's available. In order to be fully protected New Yorkers are advised to get two doses of swine flu vaccine and one seasonal flu shot.
The big question is whether the swine flu vaccine gets here before the disease breaks out.

Dr. Ruth Lynfield knows the numbers sound terrifying: 30,000 dead. 170,000 hospitalized. More than a million people infected -- all in Minnesota alone. But she doesn't want people to get the wrong idea. As state epidemiologist, it's her job to lay out all the possibilities for the next wave of swine flu, including the worst-case scenario. Now, with summer winding down and students returning to school, she's out to make sure that Minnesota avoids the worst case and gets safely through the first worldwide flu pandemic in 40 years.
It's a challenge the transplanted New Yorker and pediatrician has handled gracefully since the virus surfaced in April. "She knows so much and she's so smart," said Dr. Sanne Magnan, the state health commissioner. "She's very good at grounding us," Magnan said. "We're lucky to have her." At public appearances, Lynfield, 48, has become known for her calm recitation of the facts, laced with a subliminal message rooted in her natural optimism: "It will be challenging, but we'll make it through." For months, Lynfield has been tracking the swine flu outbreak in Minnesota and refining contingency plans. She's helping to lead a small army of about 200 staffers at the Minnesota Department of Health who have been deployed to the flu watch.
In endless meetings, they chew over the details of one possibility after another. What if a plane arrives in Rochester and a passenger is infected with a particularly deadly strain? How would they notify the other passengers?
What about the infected person -- could the state force him to stay home? "If they're quarantined, yes," Lynfield tells colleagues at one planning session. "That's the point of quarantine."
What if the patient doesn't cooperate? Well, she replies, they could post a police car outside his home. "They ended up doing this in one or two cases in Toronto" during the SARS outbreak, Lynfield adds. "But we're optimistic it won't come to that."

This can be read as Garrido’s inner trajectory, bestowing human form on Sol Niger. Now he sees the trajectory, himself – “disgusting, from beginning to end” – the Dark Side necessary to traverse to achieve The Light: “he’s turned his life around”.
